April 5th - April 9th, 2010

 Mrs.Carolyn’s Peek for April 5 – 9, 2010

We had a terrific week at the Little Village finishing up the letter T and getting ready for Easter.

The children have really enjoyed riding in the jeep, using binoculars to discover new items in the Kapok Tree, and playing with the table top Rain forest set.  They have learned many of the plants and animals names that are only found in the Rain forest.  We completed our Unit by watching an IMAX CD of the Tropical Rain Forest.  I hope you noticed the Rain Forest T-shirts the children had created and that were hung in the foyer.

We learned several Easter poems and songs this week.  The children really enjoyed decorating the white eggs that were sent in.

We did lots of hopping as we learned about children with Muscular Dystrophy. We have explained how some children’s muscles are weak and do not let them run, walk, or hop.  But, these children can still play, look at books and do art work.  We have told the children the money is to help pay for the doctors to do research to find a way to help these children.  We will have a Hop-a-thon on Tuesday, April 13th.  All monies should be in by that date.  Maybe your child could do a special chore at home and put the money he/she earned in the envelope.  This would give them a real feeling of helping.  Please let a teacher know if your child did not bring home an envelope with the information.

We will finally start the letter U this week. We will talk about umbrellas and unicorns.

We will go under the Kapok tree for one last story.

We will look at maps of the United States.

The Kindergarten boys should be reading their little books for 15 minutes each night.  They should have quite a shoe box full by now.  Have them reread the ones from the beginning of the year to review the sight words we first worked on.

Thanks again signing up for and bringing in all of the supplies we needed for egg decorating and the Easter celebrations.  The children really enjoy socializing with each other at the big table.

Have a wonderful Easter!

Mrs. Carolyn Bishop

We will spend the next two weeks creating a Tropical Rain Forest (from South America) inside the Little Village Schoolhouse.   I encourage you to look for books at the library on the Tropical Rain Forest or go online to help your child find out about the animals that live there.  We will be doing “research” in class too.  Some examples are macaws (parrots), toucans, howler monkeys, jaguars, sloths, and tree frogs to name a few.  If you have any of these animals (toys of course!) and your child would feel comfortable with sharing them with the class we would love to add them to our habitat for the next 2 weeks.

Sincerely,

August 31st - September 4th, 2009

Mrs. Carolyn’s Peek of the Week for August 31 –Sept. 4

What is a Peek?

A peek of the week is designed to give the parent an idea of what the teacher has planned for the week. I usually use a letter theme the class will be working with for the week. This will help you prepare your child to come to school with something to show and share with the class. These objects give the child a hands-on concept to put with the letter sound we are working on. It can be a toy once in a while. Your child will have a chance to describe the objects (color, size, material it is made from) and tell where they got it.

Letter S

Since we are still in the season of summer and the second day of School is in the month of September we will begin talking about the letter S. We will work with sand in Science and Art. We will work with sea shells in Math as we look at similarities and differences and group them. We will talk about what we did this summer, so you might want to see if your child can remember any of the fun things you did together.

I look forward to working with your child to discover his/her strengths and weaknesses and interests. I hope to develop your child’s passion for learning so each night they will have something new that they learned at the Little Village Schoolhouse, to share at the dinner table.

See you soon!   Mrs. Carolyn
